I'm looking to have my front strut towers rebuilt in the engine bay and would like to replace the sound deadening that has previously been removed to match the existing.

anyone know of a source of it ?

Honeycomb mats

I had reproduced these items years ago using a Wurth mat that had similar texture to the original. I may have an original repro set available--and I do have access to the dies I used to cut them cleanly as well. Not sure about interest for these, as they ended up being quite costly for the parts, the custom dies and all the handling involved lifting the price to $300/$350 a set of 8. That's why I let the project die, as back then--about 10 years ago--there wasn't enough interest to pursue.

off topic?

I have very little to offer regarding sound deadening material although I did try some commercially available materials (aluminized sheeting) designed for heating and airconditioning related uses in commercial buildings. You would have to cut to fit the material from large sheets. The closest thing I can think of is a product called Dynamat. Here is a link but I am sure there are many more near you: http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2519&itemType=PRODUCT

On another topic though, looking at your picture, I notice what appears to be the absence of temperature sensor/s in the coolant branch manifold at the top of the head (look at the top large radiator hose). Is this a stock setup? Where (if at all) do you house the coolant temp sensor? I see what appears to be as many as 4 plugs but no sensor leading me to wonder if this isn't from a much newer M30 engine.

Thanks. (Very pretty colour)

guys - thanks for your responses. all very helpful

tochi - i had to replace this part sometime ago as it had corroded - it did differ from the original, you can however see the sensor just about from this image from the other side

barry - thanks for the info and images. that's a really helpful reference and something to aspire to !

I did find quite a mess underneath this sound deadening when I did my front struts, to date I've left it off for that reason. When water gets underneath and starts to rust it can get quite bad before you see it.

I do wonder if it really does much sound deadening. Interested to hear what others think.

Thanks for the compliment Tochi - my car is the same colour combo as Christopher's albeit a little tired looking !

Hi Christopher,
Get in touch with Christoph ([email protected]). He can send you a pdf file on all the parts he reproduces, off which the sound deadning mats are also on there.

Thanks Keshav, but my original post from 2008 got resurrected. I opted not to replace after all when i did my shock towers, I'm happy i did as it looks a lot better without

image.jpeg I agree. I'm not a fan of those either. I've seen what happens when moisture/ water gets behind.
