Engine Compartment Insulation

Looking to replace the engine compartment insulation.
Not the hood but the back wall.
It was in such bad shape I removed it and discarded. Should I just do without?
Now I am considering whether this is the best option.
Any ideas?
Does it really provide any benefit?

i would not leave without
there is really a need of thermal and sound insulation
any modern material cut and paste would do, i say any, but only automotive specific materials, i mean

seems to be automotive use, that is good, not absorbs water nor oil, good
regarding R value, is better to use the thicker one, 1/2", i would not use less than that
seems odd that max temp values stop at 96C, a hot engine compartment in a hot day, can reach 130C
but one of its applications is under hood, and that is the hottest point, compared with the firewall
i think you can use itin your car

How much is the roll? The real replacement piece with all the cutouts is $184 at GetBMWParts. It's on my list to do but kinda pricey and I need to cool it for a while until my wife is off guard :)

I believe there was a long thread on firewall insulation. Helpful. When are wives ever off guard.
Actually, I have no complaints, my wife and two children gave me a weekend at the track to celebrate my 50th. Then it was new injected engine, suspension, exhaust, the whole 29 yards. Plus weekends away, etc. No complaints here. But I do think she has no idea how much I have sunk into my coupe. A vague notion, 50% perhaps. And not a small sum at that %.

Gordon,

The upper formed foam piece is still available from BMW, although a bit pricey. I think it would be hard to do this out of sheet material and have it look good. This piece is readily visible from the top and there are lots of cutouts and contours to deal with. I used this BMW piece and then cut up a heat/sound insulation sheet piece for the lower sections of the firewall. West Marine has rolls of this roughly 1/2" thick material with self adhesive backing. It's heavy and also pricey (designed for engine compartments).

1/2" think self adhesive piece that will be plenty to do the job is $155.

I would rather go with an original formed piece.
Searched the wallothnesch website and found the correct piece for an E3. No E9.
E-mailed the support line and to see if they have any info on the availability of this piece.

Sven, Steve A.- Thanks for the info.

Steve O- Wish my wife was as supportive. She see's it as a cash sucker. I guess there is no argument to this.
I tried the tact; 'I will be able to sell it for at least what I have in it' With my last major purchase I found this to be a worthless argument.

Sven, where did you buy the upper formed foam piece? I didn't find it in Walloth or BMW Europe two months ago.
Thanks.

I ordered this part from getBMWparts.com (Tischer) on March 19 and it is still showing "on order". In other words, they haven't notified me that it's NLA which they have done on other parts. So, until I hear otherwise I'll keep my fingers crossed. It still shows up as available on Penske and Maximillian but that doesn't mean it really exists in the system.

I agree with Sven, this would be hard to make this look right using aftermarket materials. I'll post if and when it shows up.

I purchased mine from W&N in 2009.

called Penske

They said none available worldwide.
He does not show it as 'No Longer Available' so it can be ordered.
But there is no way to say when or if it will be received.

I think we may be at the point that use of non-stock material may be the only choice.
