while i was out there i noticed that there was a 77 stamped on the engine block.
should have been 69 ... unless
but that got me curious now...
there is 77 stamped by the first and second intake runner along with VI
then by the third runner is a number 125 C (or G) 01 9 9
anyone with a clue?

There are two mainly:

1) Stamped on a flat pad above the starter- should be more numbers. If original it should match your vin. Should be at least 7.

2) Casting numbers- right side above the motor mount two numbers and a letter.

Early 32/34 had 3.3 and 3.0 near the water jacket on the left.

M90s- had a white L stamped on them.

I found one once with a white stamped M.? Motorsports? Metric mechanic?

Heads- near number one and two a circle with a two digit year.

here are the only numbers that were prominent to me
this is in the front by the water inlet

and the other by the fuel pump to the right

the numbers look like 125 c or g 0199

Casting Marks

That's a 77 head. The other numbers don't matter. Make sure your cooling system is up to speed. 81 or newer has larger passages.

Find your starter, above it near the bell housing for the trans is a flat space with numbers. Your heater hoses are likely covering it, so push them out of the way.:)

So... after plenty of scrubbing my knuckles ...and some scrubbing on the engine block by the bell housing.
i found a familiar number 2270046, which is extremely close to the vin # of my car.
so it's the same 2800 engine block with different heads on it for some reason...
would it even matter ? are there any valve changes between 69 and 77?

Block

You should be able to check the number on realoem or similar. If you want to get technical, look on the right side for the casting numbers. 3 of them.

The early heads were known to be problems. A 77 head isn't any different from a 69; maybe better as the cam is newer/ advanced.

Most everyone has a different head by now; don't loose any sleep over it.:)

i was actually getting excited over the possibility of having maybe 3.5l in there or so... but finding the vin# took care of that :)
if the number is upside down in respect to the vin, then i think i could make the numbers 426 out there
