I bet this has been hashed before, but I am baffled. How do I figure what year and model engine ser.#41064314 ? TIA

I'll bite

Pamp,

Use the last seven digits, input into any realoem vendor. Some require to check a box for NA or Euro. Some have an archive section. So mind the rules of the particular website.;-)

I'm not sure but here's what I recall- E28, late 84, M10.

Huh

Well, that didn't work. This is a 3.5 litre. It must be 1988 or later as it had the two bolt manifolds. Also had the one piece intake....further research required to peg it. Realoem said 1984 518i...no way....OK, used the casting number vs the serial #and came up with 1987 535i, makes sense. Thanks for the tip...

Well....

This engine must E34 or 1989. My reasoning being different bits and pieces. In 1987 for a brief period they used the suffix 808 manifold. Three bolt and clocked differently as to the three bolt pattern as Sven had noted earlier. These manifolds are cool and are ported quite nicely. 50 cc larger in volume than the suffix 603...stock for the E9. The two bolt manifolds, suffix 816, ball and cone style, with 2 inch downpipes did not happen until 1988. Also changes were made as to the thermostat housing in 1989, near as I can figure, with more ports for additional senders for motronic. Please feel free to correct me if you believe this information is in error.

Coupes all have seven-digit VINs, and the online fiches will not respond to those, they are set up for the 11-digit VINs. This is why you got the 518 model designation. Bet that was a laugh, eh?
