Guys,
Need a bit of advice here, i have done a 3.5 conversion with a late model (89) Australian spec 735i and used the old oil pan with the oil pump mods,
my question is how much oil do i need because i'm not sure how the later dipstick reads the levels in comparison to the old one?

Intend to use Castrol Magnatech 10w 40 ???

Cheers

John

I put 6 in yesterday.

@hbchris- I'll have to bend your ear regarding proper dipstickage.

Last time I went through a rapid oil change shop, I heard this story from the guys in the pit....

Some of their customers have filled their engine with oil right up to the oil cap. True story. Makes sense, no?

I wonder how many gallons that would take....

John, as Restart says , I believe it's 5.7 litres ...last time I talked "quarts",'it was a measure for the milk we drank in primary school ...have not consumed since after drinking a bottle that had been sitting in the Aussie sun for a few hours !

Thanks guys for all the responses, so two questions, should I use my old dipstick from the 3.0 and more ominously should I have blocked up a bypass when I adapted the old oil pump into the 'new' 3.5 block.... Because the new motor sounds awfully 'rattly' for the first few minutes.....

John

If you have the b35 block and the b34 oil filter set up, do not start your car again til you fix the possible missing oil bypass problem. Remove the filter housing and head unit and take a pic into the block.
Not kidding.

Oh no, for the last year the car has not moved as I have been doing rust and body work issues, but before possibly 600-700 kms in the year previously. I thought I was pretty well in formed regarding the 3.5 swap due to copious reading on the forum, but nowhere did I see anything about modifing an oil passage or low oil pressure....I was thinking it was possibly something to do with reusing the same bolts while doing the 'oil sprayer bar crimp upgrade'.

Could you Don, or some one provide some more info on this modification and what could I have possibly done to damage the new engine.

It's Sunday night here but first thing in the morning I'll take some photos of the filter, do I need to take the top off and see the inside?

A word that rhymes with truck springs to mind

John

B35 canister and head unit is a good answer.

You may not mix a early block with a late canister.
