I have been driving my car more in the last couple of weeks. Last weekend I noticed exhaust fumes in the car coming from the emergency brake boot. I knew the gasket where the exhaust manifold and down pipe meet was leaking and it was noisy. I took the car to the exhaust shop and they said they could fix everything, but needed the flange nuts to down pipe connection (six nuts). My experience with a another Bavaria parts car that had been sitting for over 10 years, we where able to take both exhaust manifolds and nuts off with some penetrating spray. The exhaust shop thinks I will need some studs and nuts to replace the ones they will have to heat up to remove. I was thinking about ordering some nuts. What I really want to do is spray all the nuts and studs with penetrating spray before I take it in to the shop. What do you think?

It can’t hurt to spray them a bit, but likely the threads on the studs will be so worn by rust that they won’t be great to use again. The exhaust shop is probably planning on hitting them with a torch and they will come right out..

I am buying new m10 hex nuts today hopefully they will come in this weekend. I am taking the car to a car show in Rockville Md October 18 there will be a couple hundred cars there, BMW club will have a section
