Hello!

I need a complete new exhaust system for my e9 (including down pipes). There is one major problem (except for the price). Should I go for a stainless steel version or an ordinary carbon steel version. A guy told me that some SS systems have a distinct resonance (may be due to thin sheet metal). Longer trips could therefore give you a real headache!
Jaymic offers a complete SS system and I wonder if anyone of you have tested it?

The good old carbon steel version is on the other hand veeery expensive! Even more expensive than SS steel from some European sources when bought complete. I guess they are produced by Bosal or a similar manufacturer. If anyone have the manufacturers
part number for each box in the system it would be interesting to check what a local supplier can offer it for.

Any opinions out there?

I have different systems in my cars, and personally like the original system best. W&N have them, made by Eberspächer rather than Bosal from Belgium.
They will last a very long time. If you want, you can drill a 3mm hole at the lowest point of each silencer, allowing condensated water to drain, rather than create rust from inside.

I tried the S/S system from W&N but it just didn´t fit, and it´s too hard to make any modifications on.

I have a stainless system on mine - made by Larini which also supply the systems for W&N - or at least I know they did in the past. On mine the fit is perfect.

It is correct that there is some metallic resonance which you won't have in a 'normal' system however I would certainly not characterise this resonance as 'noise' but rather as 'sound' and you only hear it on downshifts from fairly high revs - in fact I think it sounds great!
At normal cruising speeds you don't hear the exhaust AT ALL! If anything the system is a bit on the silent side for me!

I would agree with pmansson however that you are a bit 'locked' with the SS system in the sense that it is difficult to alter.

Go with a custom in SS. A a lot cheaper, and you can reduce the stock 3 mufflers/resonators to 2 or one. Magnaflow are good mufflers to include in your new system. Contact a local custom muffler shop.

I'm still a little unsure of what to choose. But it seems there is no problem with the metallic resonance from ss construction! I will check whether there are any local suppliers of ss systems before taking a decision. Price-wise it actually looks like it is cheaper by ss construction, at least here in Europe.

Thank's
Henrik

Exhaust - and what did you buy?

Hi Henrik - To conclude, which exhaust and where did you buy it?

Are you please with the fit etc..?

Exhaust

Sven recently put together a very nice exhaust system on his beauty. Search "Exhaust Reconfiguration" for details.

Here is what I did

Hi Henrik,

All this stuff should be pretty cheap- even in Sweeden or thereabouts. I had the 2 header pipes from the stock system. I sanded all the rust off and painted with High-temp silver, then brought to my local muffler shop and walked out the door for under 400.00 US

W&N told me their systems are still made by Larini.

All,

Reviving an old thread here, but I have come to the point I need to address my exhaust system. Long story short, I blew out my rear muffler and had it replaced by a small magnaflow exhaust; that, coupled with the deleted front and center resonator by the previous owner left me with an extremely loud system that I don't think has enough back pressure. I am looking for a temporary fix for now as I will eventually be putting in a 3.5 engine which will merit an upgrade to nicer system; for now, I would just like to quiet things down and not have the car sound like a V-8 wannabe. Peter, on your setup, what is the part number on that front resonator? Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement rear muffler?

thanks,

Walter

Hi Henrik, I have the CK HEADERS in SS here in Germany, for sale. They are ceramic coated and a great looking and sounding product. I have pics of it too if you would like to see. You can also see it on the CK we site. If you have any interest write me a email at [email protected]
Regards to all. Keshav

Suddenly discovered that there were some questions I should have replied to 4 years ago, but it's never really too late I hope.
I selected a SS system from a Swedish supplier. (I had to buy the downpipes from W&N). It has a deep rumbling sound, maybe a little too much for some. There is no problem with noise in the coupe because it is noise insulated with Dyna Mats everywhere besides felt mats and carpet.
I struggled with the mounting. Especially with the intermediate muffler. Lying underneath a car with this kind of work is not recommendable.
The question of what kind of system one should choose is actually relevant again for me since I soon will start to reassemble my 1973 CSL. I will probably go for SS again because the price gap between SS and mild steel seems to be closed (at least at W&N as far as I can see)

Hi Walter, it is a magnaflow but I don't know the model. We just found something in the shop that fit, and yes- it could be quieter. When I upgrade the engine I'll get something "proper" :-)

Thank for the reply Peter. I will go to a shop that has magnaflow products and see what can be worked. Hopefully I can just put a center resonator on it and get the effects I want. My coupe sounds like a Harley until it warms up, and even when warm, it still is pretty loud.
