As I prepare to paint my coupe the trim is one of my concerns.

It appears that the belt line trims are available though I am unsure as to the quality-control so many years after these cars were built. Anyone replaced all of their trims?

There are a few outfits that offer aluminium Brite Dip restoration though I am hesitant to to do this as I have had problems with chrome plating in the past and this seems more exacting. Anyone done this?

Then there is the option of removing the anodising and polishing everything. I did this on some 356 engine grills once (and other projects) and then hit them with 3M 3000 grit pads. Thoughts?

Lastly the fasteners and how to keep the trim from digging into the new paint work. My current trims are galling the paint. Any advice on this or any of the above would be greatly appreciated.

Have your trims polished and shot with CeraKote. Buy trim spacers from Carl Nelson so trim does not touch bodywork and wait two months before installing. Buy new T bolts from BMW and the rubber washer/nut from BMW or Walloth.

Thank you Chris,

Did you send yours out for polishing or do them yourself? Normally I would do them myself but I have a serious hand injury, with a long recovery prognosis.

When a fjord blue car left the factory (1973) would the plastic grills have been chrome plated or black? I am a bit unclear on this.

Well, I was not there then but my aesthetic intuition tells me that chrome would be best for fjord.
I think that black fits well non-metallic paint colors especially orange, yellow, and perhaps white.

That was my thought as well...

My Malaga May 73 had black. The parts book says dark colors had chrome, light colors silver but by 73 it implied all were black. When in 73 is anybody’s guess.
