I'm a novice and not great at working on cars so really just trying to guide my mechanic. My fan clutch is bad and I understand they aren't replaceable. Is there a reliable replacement for an A/C fan that's been being used here that someone could point me to? I'm just not sure where to start in looking for one online.

Hi Audiokat - Its not clear what you are asking here. You mention an "A/C fan" in your second sentence. There are two A/C fans - one mounted to the front of the radiator that cools the condensor, and another that provides air circulation over the evaporator and into the passenger cabin. Neither of these has a clutch on it. I'm assuming you are not talking about air conditioning.

The cooling system has a fan clutch. It is located on the front of the engine and activates the fan to cool the engine. I'm assuming this is what you are concerned about.

It is possible to change these to the later spin-on fan clutch, but you need to change to the later style water pump. This is the best possible setup: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/viscous-fan-coupling-aka-viscosity-fan-clutch.47625/post-418312

Yes I am concerned with the fan clutch on the radiator. I'd read on here about people retrofiting electric fans for a simpler setup but as I dive deeper intro thread history I'm seeing a lot of different directions users have gone. Thank you for that thread I've read through that and just asked for an update to see how his process has gone.

There are a number of approaches that you can take, each will require some investment.
  • You can find a replacement fan clutch. They are out there.
  • You can go with a full electric fan set up. @shanon posted on this topic a few years ago (fairly certain it was titled arctic wind)
  • You can switch to a modern clutch fan set up. (I use this approach) and @sfdon has posted several times on this topic.
The simplest is just replacing the fan clutch, but you still have the worry of the condition of the aging fan blades.

This is super helpful. By chance do you know the part number on the original clutch?
