I have a set of e21 intake runners to install on the L jet style log manifold and I will have to modify the mounting bracket at the fuel pressure regulator. I believe the system remains pressurized even after it stops running (I haven't run the engine for over a month) so just opening a hose clamp will spray gas all over the engine compartment and possibly me. All of this correct so far or am I blowing the amount of fuel involved out of proportion?

Draining the system is problematic as I have a surge tank above the height of the fuel pump and so the most sanitary method is to run the fuel system dry after cutting power to the in-tank pre-pump.

for less of a mess- fire it up and then pull the fuel relay. mindyou that just gets rid of the pressure.

It has been sitting for a month? You may still have some pressure, but it should be less than operational pressure. Plus, it isn't as though we are talking about a ton of gas; perhaps a quarter-cup (like used in baking) at most. That quantity evaporates in no time flat.
