why do you think bmw didnt provide a rubber strip
for the exposed fender /infender top seam.
i added a v piece left over from my orders
it sure looks better there.

I'm guessing that the seals up top are primarily to keep engine fumes out of the heater intake. Most cars have channels to direct the rain down towards the nose. A seal won't do much.

I tend to agree with Markos; the rubber close to the windscreen clearly needs to be there to keep engine smells away from being sucked into the passenger compartment.
The rubber to the front, close to the hinges, I think is added to guide the airflow through the radiator instead of over it.

Now that only leaves the sides of the hood open for forced (through the radiator) and natural 'bottom-up' ventilation; as the engine needs to dissipate heat, you need to have airflow. Adding the rubber would force all hot air down. And that´s not the way warm air normally travels....
Don´t argue with physics; I would surely leave the sides open.

With those rubbers installed wouldn't the engine bay temperature rise more then normal / acceptable? (mind you I'm no engine guy...)

Erik.

Oh, there....Indeed there is another gap.
I've Always found the layout of the fender sheet metal parts quite complex .... So:
Stuck on top of the inner fender, but not het edge of the gutter of the inner fender, in the area where you actually can't see it , even with the hood open? The top of the rubber would then touch the underside of the outer fender.

Is that about the right description for your thoughts, Alan?

I would be fearfull of the rubber getting coated with sand and then abrading the coating of the underside of the outer fender. There is bound to be some vibration.

(Doing Failure Mode Effect Analysis has always been a hobby for me....)
