Hope you and your loved ones are ok.

Amazing how tremendous the force of nature can be. We saw it on the news here in the Netherlands, it quite extemsively covered.

Being a country where half of the surface area is below sea level - I see the immense task ahead to battle floods. Especially when they are increasing in frequency and severity.

not my place, this is 700km away from that; a completely different country in terms of topography, rainfall, and infrastructure

there is a lot to talk about how they maintain their infrastructures, this has been very strong, but every year they have water damages, it rains very little there, many flood-prone areas there have been converted into urban land, let's say through a process of historical neglect, allowing small settlements that have been consolidated over time. There are many areas that were river beds that normally remain dry for months and sometimes years, which are commonly used as parking and in some cases even converted into land for housing .
It is not surprising that once a year there are cases less severe than this one; this time it is said to have been up to 700m3 in 6 hours.
But many casualties were people that went out to rescue their cars !!!

I am from Valencia and personally I have not had any problems. Just a chemical warehouse that is completely destroyed.
But I have had many friends who have lost family members, their homes, their businesses, their daily cars and some their classic cars.
I won't give you photos or videos because all of this is very sad.
It was October 29 and in 15 minutes you see how your house has from 1.5 to some places 2.8 meters of muddy water.
After a month, economic and military aid is missing to begin normality.
The friends of the capital and surrounding areas of the disaster organized themselves from the beginning to clean them up and help them financially for the most essential things. Some have babies and it is very hard.
Regarding what deQuincey said, it is more complicated than the information he has given.

Probably too early to root cause the reasons, but Americans know very well that the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain...

Hoping for a quick recovery.
