For Sale, a known-good Getrag 265/6 5-speed overdrive transmission. Asking $1500 Or Best Offer. I believe it came out of an E28 with about 150,000 miles, so says the person I bought it from. I did have it installed for a short time in my E23, so I can vouch that it’s smooth shifting with no crunch or grind upshifting or downshifting, and there’s no whine or other noise. I removed it and put back the close-ratio dog-leg trans that came with the car. I’ve since sold the E23, and I have no need for this one any more.

Still learning about the variations. Does this have the mechanical speedo connector? It would be for my ‘72 E3.

E28?

Wouldn't that have a electronic speedo?

Hole means nothing. Need to take a picture of the hole to see if the gear is actually there.

I see no retaining bolt

If this is out of a e28 it is the one year only version from 1984 I believe.
question- does it have a small plug installed in the speedo cable port?
if so you will need all the speedo parts to be installed after removing the plug and output seal, flange and spacer for this to be used in an e9.
if there is no plug currently, take a minute and verify the round gear is inside on the output shaft.
if you are missing the Speedo drive parts you will require the bolt, 2 seals, the shim, - well there are nine different parts needed.

You say there it has the opening for the speedo drive- but not whether its blocked or you have the requisite parts.

very nice clean though and not showing much wear.

After buying the parts if needed and a visit to a gear shop to install the gears, reseal and inspect the tranny I imagine the total bill would be around 600 bucks over and above the 1500 you are asking.

It does not have a plug in the hole. I’ll take a pic tomorrow. It was plug and play with my 1981 733i. You don‘t need to install gears. I removed the 265/5 that was installed and replaced it with this one. I plugged in the speedo cable and the speedo, worked fine.

The buyer is welcome to have the tranny inspected. If it’s not good, you can return it for a full refund.

If you have a manual tranny in your coupe you already have them.
if you are doing a auto to manual swap- 100-150 bucks and some searching.

Thanks. Yes. 4 spd in my E3. Would love a 5 spd, but thinking about risks of going from a 42k trans to a 150k trans. That said, if I buy one I’d send it straight to Metric Mechanics for a rebuild. My understanding is, however, some parts can’t practically be replaced.
@greene3 - not ignoring the fact that you drove it and can vouch for it, just a lot of miles. Just thinking out loud, here.

That mileage is not bad, these are very robust. Most of us with this trans have as many or more miles than this one.
