This one may take a bit, but hopefully some lessons in it for everyone who loves these cars..

I bought my first old car a little over a year ago, mainly because I missed working on my own car (does anybody know how to wrench on a modern BMW?), and also because the E9 had this effortless beauty about it. After looking a bit, I found a 71 sahara 2800 that was original, but needed alot of love.

So, I started working on everything I could, and learned alot along the way from the many posts and helpful advice that this community offers. Thank you everybody who helps, your sharing helps keep these cars going. The car wasn't a show queen (cracking paint, those pesky mouldings, etc.) but it sounded and went very well towards the end. It was a great feeling to fix something and feel the difference.

Last December just after leaving Carl's shop, I was headed to work and through an intersection. Birds chirping, webers warm, and downshifting into 3rd at 40mph. About 4 cars back on the opposite side a driver decides to make a blind U-turn in front of me. Long story short, the poor car is toast.

So three months and I just got sorted by the insurance company which was an ordeal and a half. To everybody who has a coupe, I hope you're insured specifically with an AGREED VALUE POLICY..and pad it. Even the slightest damage will make your car a total loss, and insurance companies have..distorted..methods when it comes to valuation of these older cars.

She was a beauty

Was the car totaled? Were you able to salvage any parts?
If it was totaled, did you register the VIN as "gone forever" in our CS registry?
And last, with which company was the car insured?

Been there, done that. An agreed-value (not just a "stated value") policy is a must for these cars or for any car that is even remotely collectible. Hagarty, American Collectors and others offer the policies.

The photos are lovely, the news is sad. I have agreed value! on my 74 Polaris 1974 at
$30K. The classic car policy is folded into all my other policies with State Farm. I pay about $160. a year. Generous mileage limits, allowed me on the track for Driver's Schools, no problems ever.

The car was totaled, and oh I should register it on the site. I could have taken it apart, but I felt it's wierd so it will be done at Carl's shop. Yeah I figured that collector car policy's would protect the cars at whatever value is assigned. Anyways, I had AAA, and I would probably use them again, but definitely the next coupe will be agreed value-
