This one may take a bit, but hopefully some lessons in it for everyone who loves these cars..
I bought my first old car a little over a year ago, mainly because I missed working on my own car (does anybody know how to wrench on a modern BMW?), and also because the E9 had this effortless beauty about it. After looking a bit, I found a 71 sahara 2800 that was original, but needed alot of love.
So, I started working on everything I could, and learned alot along the way from the many posts and helpful advice that this community offers. Thank you everybody who helps, your sharing helps keep these cars going. The car wasn't a show queen (cracking paint, those pesky mouldings, etc.) but it sounded and went very well towards the end. It was a great feeling to fix something and feel the difference.
Last December just after leaving Carl's shop, I was headed to work and through an intersection. Birds chirping, webers warm, and downshifting into 3rd at 40mph. About 4 cars back on the opposite side a driver decides to make a blind U-turn in front of me. Long story short, the poor car is toast.
So three months and I just got sorted by the insurance company which was an ordeal and a half. To everybody who has a coupe, I hope you're insured specifically with an AGREED VALUE POLICY..and pad it. Even the slightest damage will make your car a total loss, and insurance companies have..distorted..methods when it comes to valuation of these older cars.
