Last fall, when prepping my E12 for an event, a simple brake bleeding turned into a great, multi-week circus that. among other things, left me with an OE caliper with a cracked casting at the upper bleed screw. A friend of mine has another friend who he described a master at metal work, and suggested I send it to him to repair it. Since I eventually found a good reman caliper at LaJolla Independent to get on the car when I needed it, and could get the original back whenever, I sent my original caliper off to him. This week, I got it back and it's beautiful. He ground away the affected area with a carbide burr, used low-fuming bronze rod to build the area back, then burrs, flap discs, files, etc to shape it back to the original shape, a needle scaler and peening hammer to replicate the original casting surface finish, then drill and tap for a new bleed valve.

Due to all the heat put into the casting, it obviously needs a rebuild. The one part of this that I'm not sure where to get are the O-rings between the caliper halves and the spacer (he disassembled the caliper). I couldn't find anything in the archives here that gave me a part number, but I did some searching for Volvo calipers (since I recalled that some 240s used the same front caliper) and found this:

Can anyone confirm whether this is a correct O ring for the E3/E9/E12 caliper? Also, how many are there per caliper - 2 or 4?

Thanks - I’m familiar with them (I have a 911) and they do great work, but it wouldn’t have occurred to me that they’d have parts that would fit a BMW caliper.

On second thought, I bet most two-piece calipers use similar bolt specs.

They only list brakes for Porsche and VW vehicles on their site! :) Rick, thanks for that warning. I’ll call them Monday. I believe I have ATE calipers.

Call Eric- he has been doing ATE brakes for Ferrari, BMW-anyone that use ATE for a long time.

Or call Graem at Caliper HQ

Or just pay the 120 bucks and have Graem rebuild it for you?
Then you know it is done right.
