Has anyone ordered a new seal for the firewall recently? The replacement seal is not quite what the old one was - anyone know where to get an original style seal?

In what ways? Also, are you referring to the metal lined seal that snaps into place across the bulkhead? On a related matter, I've seen black and gray hood/bonnet seals, the gray version seems kind of odd to me.Are the black ones still available?

Bert,

I mean the one that goes across the firewall, not the one that goes around the back and can be grey. Are they actually grey or is it the talc type powder on them?

The one that goes across the firewall has been superceded by what seems a sub standard part to me.

firewall insulating pad

I bought one from maximillian a few months ago. Wasn't cheap, but came in OEM BMW wrappings, and looks every bit like the original. Really dresses up the engine compartment.

My only complaint is that it comes with a "self sticking" backing, but it doesn't hold well. The pad itself is stiff, of course, and doesn't perfectly conform to the metal firewall, so there is always a little pressure on the adhesive, making it pull loose in a couple of places. Eventually I guess I'll have to pull it off and apply a more substantial contact adhesive.

Please take a look at my restoration, you can see several pics from different angle, and light of the new BMW part I used.Note it is not glued there yet, just hung on the edge of firewall.

Yes, thats the one - the original one had a hollow centre and makes a better seal. I wonder can his be sourced?

Where did you find the two engine-side firewall insulation pads? They really dress up the engine compartment restoration! Mine was recently restored, but had to use the old pads. After reading this and another thread, I found one on Maximillian and assume it is the black/top one? If that is the case: Does anyone know if the foil covered/lower one is available anywhere?

Engine compartment firewall pads available?

the upper firewall pad--is still available--but as was mentioned the adhesive is not the most effective in securing the upper corners.

the original lower pad was NOT a shiny item as indicated--that was likely a mylar coated foam--a popular substituted replacement--and according to my efforts in trying to locate the original pad--it was similar in appearance to the upper one--lower one has not been available for over 20 years.

A quick call to Carl Nelson confirmed my above experience--so--if anyone can suggest a material that can be located having--suitable appearance, with durable heat and sound barrier with oil resisting qualities that may be available--

please share same info with other Coupsters
