After removing the old races from my front hubs, I noticed some scoring on the inside of the hub. The bearings had obviously been replaced before (one had Canada markings, the other Mexico markings) and I can see screwdriver marks.

How much of an issue is this? Since this will be in contact with the outer side of the new races and not directly with the bearings, would some light sanding to remove the high points be adequate or do they need to be machine cleaned?

Easy to do when removing races. If a big mark take some emery paper to it and smooth it down.
Otherwise just put the new races back in.
