They work fine after cleaning and lubing, BUT the drivers door will sometimes not get going, even though the motor is working. A quick push on the threaded, nylon wheel will set it off. Happens only when window is at the top/closed, and I want to lower it.
To avoid having to take off the black plastic cap and do this through the door panel, is there something I can do to ensure that it sets off EVERY time??

Did you lube just the rails, or the gearbox for the motor, as well? The nylon drive gear also tends to deform over time, usually when the window is up.

Everything but the gearbox (if you mean the almost round part above the threaded nylon wheel?). To access and open that, I need to unbolt the window mechanism (4 bolts) and move it so that I can undo the motor (4 bolts). OR, do I have to take out the mechanism from the door and undo the gearbox from the rear???
What will that reveal? Old, stiff grease.....and..

Some of my cars´rear gearbox is accessible via 3 bolts, but the car I am working on today does not have that useful feature. It is a Feb. `73 car.

Window sticking in top or bottom position

Today I had to work quite hard, and many times, with my thumb on the threaded nylon wheel, accessible though the small round aperture, to get it going.
If I leave it at almost top or almost bottom position, it will always set of as it should using the switch. Somehow, it doesn´t like to start from the extreme end positions.

By "cleaning the gearbox", you mean taking out the motor with top, round, gearbox and checking inside??? Everything else is cleaned and lubed with fresh grease.

It is otherwise, my second quickest, electric window mechanism, among my 7 cars. The early 73 Ceylon car is increadibly fast, whereas my late 73 Nachtblau met. car has very slow operation, but they have never caused me any problem operation wise.

Re: Window sticking in top or bottom position

The regulator plate has two stop bolts that have rubber bumpers that collapse over time. You can either replace the bumpers or lengthen the bolts to stop the window before it overtravels and binds.

I found these collapsed bumper's bulging sides rub against the side of the gear wheel - and perhaps slow things down. Just get new ones.

window motor

You may want to inspect the assist spring i had on break on me and replaced it and all is well. Good luck
