How times change ...a car that in the day sold for an eye watering price yet two years later the "lifting metallic paint " needed to be replaced ...and BMW offered 50/50 on repair cost ?...hmmm, maybe they haven't changed .

That's the classic clear coat failure issue that BMW had in the 70s. They wouldn't own up to the entire cost to fix.

i think it is already a parts car, the question is whether the market would be there to support an effort to reclaim it

Hard to imagine the shock towers are fine with all of the other rust. Parts car? What parts are still usable?
