I had a very similar set-up in my 911. Worked pretty well considering the alternatives are nothing...
 
Not sure what you mean , can you elaborate
years ago a member made a lot of center arm rest / slide-out cup holders. A console that went between the seats and the top opened for internal storage. The slide out cup holder was made of a hard plastic but for some it was not up to the task. Mine has held up well but I am very careful
 
I have an "ultimate cup holder" that installs in a very similar place that I have used for years in my e39 and another installed in my e9. For those of you who have not yet ordered these, you don't need two. One installed on the passenger side is the way to go. Easier to reach and use while driving, but requires you to get a little fresh with passengers.
