Fuel supply problems in CSI. SOLVED!!!

The CSI's fuel system problems strike back. Last year, the pressure regulator was changed after finding out that it wasn't working properly. One month ago, the car started to jerk so badly that it broke the guibo. A fuel pressure test revealed that the pressure dropped after some minutes of work. A new fuel pump was fitted but the problem is still there.

Is there any other place to look for the pressure failure ?

Possibilities: Clogged fuel lines, both steel and rubber, especially check the return line. Clogged fuel suction device and the fuel mesh screen at the bottom of the fuel pickup. They both could be filled with rust particles restricting proper fuel flow.

Dropping Fuel Pressure

Also:

Double check pump/ fuel/ tank connections for air leak.

Measure voltage at pump.( Key on and AFM propped open) If low, bad connections or combo relay contacts starting to go.( High resistance or bad grounds.)

Safety fuel cutoff switch/ function/ malfunction. Several versions depending on what system or combination you have. Early was AFM; later was ECU controlled or reset device nearby.

I burned throgh three pumps. All under warranty, in about 10 weeks, the Bosch Rep. at the time said I had gone through a lifetime of pumps, he asked me to take the car to a Bosch service center, they took the pump apart and found the vanes in the pump were getting locked up by some compound used to pacth a HOLE in the fuel tank that was breaking apart. NEW pump NEW TANK same pump for 20 years. Three in two mos. THE car would stop so hard it was like the car had a chain tied to it and came to the end of the chain!. . So the stops were like a hammer. Even at 10mph. The hole system would lock-up and some time it would free it self but it would keep happening. 72 3.0csi

Thank you all. This week I'll have a look for rust/dirt in the tank and the mesh in the fuel pickup. I'll report the progress.

sorry can not help on this, mine is a CS

Yeah, well, I've got rid of thirty something years of dirt from the 'tank. The mesh screen also refurbed. The car runs ok. As a sideline, the tank had no rust, and there's not a trace of any repair on it. Time consuming but rewarding.

Big thanks to you all!.
