Fuel Tank Senders - Did they differ from earlier carb'd cars to later ones?

Can anyone help me with this:

The fuel guage on my March 1969 2800CS has never worked properly - It jumps around, reads inaccurately and generally can't be trusted.

I traced this to a dodgy sender and tried to replace it with the one from the car being broken / dismantled for parts mentioned in Don's post here: http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9473

However the "new" sender has a cylinder which is maybe 240mm long and does not fit into my tank, whereas the old one has a cylinder which is only maybe 160 - 180mm long.

What gives? I clearly have a smaller tank than the parts car and now I think of it, I've always wondered why I can't seem to fit the amount of fuel into the tank than my handbook (which is a 2800 CS handbook) says I should - Did the tanks (and therefore the sender units for the guage) change soon after the cars' launch? I always thought the fuel tanks were of the same capacity right through the production run?

Is it possible that someone has replaced my tank with one from a 2002? Are they the same mounting?

So many questions, some knowledge would be much appreciated before I decide what to do next - I'm driving the car to my "stag do" this weekend and would really appreciate knowing how much fuel is in the tank as it's a long-distance trip.

Thanks!

2800CS had smaller tanks than 3.0CS. As you have discovered, the senders are different lengths.

At least some 1600-2002 tanks fit and those also vary in capacity.
