I have two Bavaria's an 73 and a 71. I was driving my 71 and ran out of gas.(my gas gauge does not work). I put some gas in the car but could not get it to start. I got the car towed home. A couple of days go by and I take the supply hose a loose from the fuel pump and gas comes shooting out. The car starts right up, I think the only different is the gas cap was not in place on the side of the road. I took the hose a loose at the tank and went to get a new filter when I got back gas was coming out of the tank and leaking on the ground. I loosen the cap and it stopped leaking. This is an after market cap should it be putting this much pressure on the fuel? Are there other BMW caps that would work on these cars? I am in the process of ordering a new stock cap.

When these run out of gas and have a mechanical pump, they are difficult to get going. If you dont fix the gauge, I suggest you carry a few ounces of gas in a closed jar. I was towed also for the same reason. Did not matter that I walked to a station, dealt with an ass who wanted to sell me a gas can for 50 bucks. When I got home, poured in some gas and bingo.

Thanks Bob, I thank my problem is the ground to the fuel gauge and tach since neither work. It is on my list of things to do. I still try to drive the car once a week
