I was thinking I have the ritual of always leaving the car parked in second gear. A useful ritual I think.
But I press the clutch to move the lever into 2nd gear, and when I think about Scott's tutorial on manual transmissions, it is totally useless if the engine is off.
Any others have the useless routine?

My early years driving was in old cars (fuel injection was a long way off) and I didn't always tune the carbs or adjust the chokes. So I got in the habit of backing into parking places so I could fire up and get the car moving forward as soon as possible. A habit that persists, I always back into spots for a quick getaway.

With the coupe I always put it in first gear when parking. The parking brake holds okay, but I need to pull up hard to get the final "click" before I know it will hold, but I never trust it alone.

I had the opportunity to hang out with @E9Wayne 's coupe for a couple of weeks (see here for details: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/m...ion-sensor-only-buy-bmw-oem.48052/post-421736), and his parking brake worked pretty much as you describe. Because there is only one small level spot on my driveway, this made me crazy. The fix was merely to readjust the rear parking brake shoes as detailed in section 11.2 of the Autobooks Manual (https://e9coupe.com/tech/autobooks/autobooks_manual.pdf). I only needed to do the shoe adjustment portion of this on Wayne's car. The cables did not require any adjustment. I suspect your car may only require a brake shoe adjustment as well.

Thanks @Ohmess. I have a project planned for this winter to pull apart the rear axle to powder coat and to rebuild the various assemblies, including the parking brakes. Given that it may be just an adjustment I may just need to climb under the car to make the adjustments now so I can enjoy it through the fall!

You make the adjustment through the rotor. See figure 11.3 in the Autobooks Manual. Just jack up the car, remove the wheel, turn the rotor until you can see the star wheel through the hole and away you go.
