I just got a bunch of parts that were to be used in a auto to manual conversion and I need some help identifying the gearbox. The markings are

262 0 0510 90
225
1.3

It appears to have the hole for the speedo cable but it is plugged and does not appear to have ever been used.

I would also like to know how the retrofit the speedo cable drive, I have an old 262 4 speed I can strip for parts.

Fred,

I would suggest two things:

1. Post a pic of the trans. 262 is a case number which could mean either 4 speed or 5 speed ( 265).( Three piece.)

2. There are quite a few posts describing installing the speedo gear for those cases that have the plug or plate. Just search for speedo gear.

I'll try the search now and it's a 3 piece case, I don't have a gearstick attached so it's a bit difficult to check the shift pattern.

With the plugged hole for the speedo drive and a 3-piece case, it is a Getrag 265 and from either a 1985 5, 6 or 7 series or from an E30 M3.

Made up a basic mount to fit a gear stick and checked the shift pattern, 1st is down and to the left so it would appear to be a 265/5 CR.
I would have liked it to be an OD but this could be fun for a while, now all I have to do is fit it.

Yes, go for it!
