Removed a Getrag 262 4-speed due to severe noise. Discovered input bearing with torn up bearing cage and missing one or two ball bearings (No 6 below). No idea what happened to bearings, as they did not fall out with removal nor were they found in transmission case. Did find piece of bearing cage at bottom of transmission housing. Surprisingly little metal clinging to the magnetic drain plug. Lube looked uncontaminated and grit free.
Anyone encounter this situation (input bearings destroyed and/or missing) and gotten away with limited repairs, i.e., replacement of just the input shaft bearings, shims and front seal? If possible, would prefer not splitting case. Since initial post have discovered a spare trans that looks promising, but has unknown history. Wondering out loud if it is feasible to test on bench with power tools or lathe.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
