I have to pull the 5spd and need to confirm the part number for the gasket between the bell housing and the transmission case. RealOEm http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=3995&mospid=47163&btnr=23_0612&hg=23&fg=05 shows part number 23129065642 but no picture of the gasket. Anyone confirm this is correct gasket?

The reason I'm doing this is one end of the spring clip (part # 6) has let loose and the fork lever is sitting off kilter against the throwout bearing and making unhappy noises - still works but eventually it will not. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=3995&mospid=47163&btnr=21_0066&hg=21&fg=05 Anyone else had this happen? Assembled 20,000mi ago using all new parts.

Thanks

There is no gasket between the front of the transmission and the bell housing. They mate metal to metal.

Thanks Sven - I thought I recalled that gasket shelac/Loctite 570 was painted on but can't find any reference to it now. I have metal to metal and get drips of tranny fluid hence the question about a gasket.

I had this problem as well. Turns out it was the rear crank oil seal was not put in quite far enough by the engine rebuilder. Another source may be the seal plate at the rear of the head. It all runs down to the same place.

I think I remember using some gasket sealant along with a very thin gasket for this that surface.

Are you sure the drip is transmission oil and not engine oil?

Definitely tranny oil. Again, RealOEm does not show a gasket in either location and if it doesn't seal at the input cover then the drip will show at the bell housing/trans connection. The transmission is out (3 hours) but it will have to wait until I get my bike ride in. Hardest part was removing the gearshift cir-clip.
