5 speed conversion

Hi Henrik,

I purchased my parts for the 5 speed conversion (Getrag 265) from "Blunt tech Industries" in Minnesota. I am sure you could find these parts closer by in Europe. I bought; e28 shifter platform ($55), Z3 shift lever 1.9L & cross member ($38) and it works great. Hope this helps

Hi!

Looked on their homepage and did a quick search. It gave no results. So I´ll send them an Email. When did you buy the parts?

You can get almost all the parts you need from your local BMW dealer. Just check what BMW fitted to a 5speed E12 or early E24 and it's plug and play. The only modded item you need to get from another source is a shorter prop shaft.

I got all the other parts from a local dealer but the cross member and gear stick are no longer available, according him.
Used ones are hard to find too!
Henrik

This may not be available but it isn't shown without a price. From E12 530.

Contacted Blunt Tech Industries and got a reply from them (06:00 AM local time!!).
They have the gear lever but the cross member are NLA. They will try to find a used one.

That's for the 4-speed. It could work for the 5-speed since the 265 has the rear ear, but the 265 crossmember would be the way to go. Two rubber mounts instead of just one.

The cast piece is still available.
Call Ben at la jolla independent.

Part # 23 71 1 175 731

DerSchwede already mentions this.

You will need 2 rubber mounts.

This part number 23 71 1 175 731 comes up looking like this:

Whereas part 23 71 1 175 314 (from Carl Nelson's how to) looks like this:

So which one is correct/preferred for a Getrag 265 conversion from 4-speed?

Part # 23 71 1 175 731

DerSchwede already mentions this.

You will need 2 rubber mounts.

Preferred is nla
That leaves you with the cast one with two mounts.

I used the 731 type, different from the above picture. The only issue in using it is the mounting holes in the bracket on either side ended up in line with the opening for inserting the bolt into its track. This can be fixed with a stud welded to a plate which is fitted to 2 bolts in the track, the mount then bolts to the stud.

The problem is the better and much cheaper total cost cross member is NLA.
Important to request the cross member that came out of that 528i you sourced your tranny from!
If you don't have the steel original item you can still get the job done using the cast unit.
Be prepared to pay big bucks for the TWO rubber mounts and be be prepared for a broken cast mount some day as these were not engineered for high output engines.
Neither Carl nor double02 salvage have the stamped steel unit used available to the best of my knowledge.
Finally? Those pics of the steel supports are messed up. Both pics are the same of different parts with different part numbers.
Same issue with the cast pics- they are wrong.

I used the e24/e28 part number 23-71-1-175-731 pictures above. While this part was only $35, the rubber mounts were $54 each!

Was not aware of Don's comment that this baby may not handle a great deal of stress (and how exactly does one prepare for a broken transmission mount!/)
