Got her! But how old is my lady?

Hi Folks,

Finally got her. It took a while but as I couldn't find anything in Oz I managed to get a car from New Zealand.

She is LHD originally from US, VIN # 2264455, 3.0CSi Polaris. It appears that back in 1990 her previous owner took her back to Europe where she spent most of the time in Switzerland and a few years in Belgium. The guy then moved to New Zealand to retire and again took her with him.

I went back in December to have a look and it was a love at first sight

She finally arrived last week and I managed to push her through customs and Quarantine (what a pain in the a..h).

Next step is to register her and that’s where the problems started. The state I live in requires an engineering certificate if the car was built after 1972. All paperwork I have is saying 1973 except one where build date is 1972 and first rego is 1973.

Any idea how to determine how old my lady is?

Cheers
Viggen

A well traveled E9. Quarantine for cars? Has it come to that? And they would just let me off the plane without a Bath?

Congratulations on acquiring a new Coupe, hopefully a local Expert has an answer for your manufacture date question.

Click CS Registry above.
Click BMW build Data and send them an email with your vin.
BMW Archive will reply with build date, original color and original delivery destination

Without taking time to check

I would say that 2264xxx is a Euro spec car from 1973. I have 2 such cars. Perhaps the same VIN series was used for cars going straight to the US, but I don´t htink so.
Got to run,
Peder

Confirmed !
My CSi "2264207" has -on her documents -"Première date de mise en circulation" (First registration date) :

23/04/1973

if this can help

chris.

First registration is when the car was sold not necessarily when the car was built.

My 1974 E9 was built in Dec 1974 but not registered until May 1975... This car still has the 1972 bumper guards which might be Euro spec in 1973...

If he wanted he could probably get the car titled as a 1972.

Hello again,

What do yo mean by Euro spec /1972 bumper guards ?
As far as I know, all E9 bumper guards on the old continent was alike from the 1st 2800 CS till the very last CSi.
Why titling it 1972 then, if it was built in 1974 ?
Anyway the date of registration gives an idea of when the car was built.

Correct me please if I missed something !

1973 US cars had different front guards had thicker rubber and the bumpers moved out

"She is LHD originally from US, VIN # 2264455"

This wrong because there were no US CSi they were only Euro versions... According to the E9 production numbers there were 6506 CSis built ending in Dec 1972 including the chassis number 2264455...

" The state I live in requires an engineering certificate if the car was built after 1972."

The original post said that there are more government regulations for cars built after 1972 so there is a motivating factor at work for having the car be a 1972... Please also note the 1973 US E9s had the 2 1/2 mile per hour bumpers with extended bumpers (longer Brackets) and thicker rubber that looked like it was upside down on the bumper guards...

Viggen,
Using the BMWCSregistry.org registry on this site you should be able to prove to the "officials" that the car was built as a 1972 model...

Welcome to Oz !

$300 for steam cleaning and re-inspection.

Thanks Nicad. The local BMW "expert" approved by the state gov. can only recognise the VINs from 1980 (no comment). They want me to get an official letter from BMW or I can proceed as 1973 which I try to avoid if I can.

I waited for so long, I can still wait for another couple of weeks.

Cheers

Hi Stan,

I've done it a few days before. Does anybody know how quick they are to respond?

Cheers

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Bought in EU as new and shipped with the owner to US. First registration in US.

I will give it a go but it seems to me they will not accept anything unless it has a big white & blue roundel stamped on the letter

I will talk to a BMW HQ in Melbourne on Monday.

I don't think Andreas's email is active as an error comes back. I'm trying to find some technical information on my e9 and was wondering if Does anyone else know where there is a web site that works on the early BMW's when typing in its vin? I'm looking for my e9s factory specifications and build date.

my last contact with Julia is that they are shut down while they move to Moosacher Straße 80 in Munich. She said they will reopen in March with their new database.

Build dates and date of registration are sometimes confusing the 'model year' designation.

Most European car builders usually start building 'next year models' around August (e.g. 1974 model year cars in August of 1973). The car then - in some countries, like the USA - are titled as 'following year models (The one above would be a 1974 in the USA). In many countries, especially in Europe, the car is registered as a 'model' of the year in which it was first privately owned. Thus, the example above would be classified as a 1973 if it was first titled in November 1973, as a 1974 if it was first titled in May of 1974, and even a 1975 model year car if it stayed on the showroom floor for 16-18 months and was first titled in February of 1975.

Probably can't get it sorted out without the official build date from BMW. Good luck, hope you can get it as a 1972 model. It certainly appears that it left the factory in Munchen BEFORE December 31, 1972.

Since it was first purchased in Europe, that is the 'date of record' for titles stating the model year. I'm pretty sure you'll need to get BMW to provide a 'production date' to have a chance at a '72 model year.
