My current side grills were attached with some black goop (tastefully) and did not have the black background. I obtained background and new ($$$) side grills (thanks for the contact jh) and have a few questions.

Were the hood or side grills black on any models except the CSL? My coupe has black hood grills but I suspect they were painted during restoration by the PO because of wear.

On the chrome side grills should the vertical supporting bars be painted black?

The Mobile tradition catalog lists screws (???) and gromet 51 13 1831 395 to attach side grills. Is the gromet for use with the screws or the posts (which I have on mine - old and NOS). I think I remember Blumax or someone suggesting rubber tubing from behind to hold grill on. I certainly don't want it to fall off. Is one method better?

Many thanks. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Grilles

At some point the grilles became black instead of chrome, either late 72 or early 73? My malaga US 73 is black. They are held on by black grommets that push on for the side grilles, hood grilles use tiny screws.

The vertical support bars on grills I took off my '71 were painted black. I didn't bother trying to paint my new ones. I used small stamped self threading nuts to hold the grill in place; I was extremely cautious when installing. I also cut thin black vinyl to lie under the grill and I used the vertical separators to hide the edges (the proper design extends all the way to the front of the grill recess but this would have left an exposed vinyl edge).

out of curiousity, has anybody determined when the change took place? i have recently seen pictures of '73 coupes - jabberjaw had black grilles, the kansas city polaris coupe had chrome, another fjord 73 has black (early april 73), the beautiful ceylon 73 that sold at the beginning of 2011 has chrome (mid april 73) is it possible that it was color dependent.

okay execmalibu - i'm getting fitted for my white suit and the guy is coming down the hall to tighten the straps - how long before my nose starts to itch?

Mine are all nickel plated chrome - lovely and expen$ive. I have always used black electrician's tape, cut to size to create the fake void the bean counters refused to pay for.

Even though my Polaris coupe is a 74 the chrome and silver look better to me. Sometimes looks are everything.

mi car was originally white, amd the grills were black

then the PO painted it in dark blue, so i bought chromed grilles from walloth

for the lateral ones i bought the black vynil and a kind of grommets that fit into the small points that the grill has in the rear side, you introduce the grommets fron the other side of the car body (wheel arch area), and you press them hard against the mentioned points, and that is all, they keep the grilles in their place
for the hood grilles i was fortunate enough to recover the original nylon adapters, and using new screws everything went ok

regards

The grills on my 73 are black. I replaced them with new black grills after a repaint and used bits of rubber tube to hold them in place.

Sorry for the thread drift, but I have a question. As I look at the trunk of this car, it appears that the chrome molding that runs along both sides of the car continues across the rear of the trunk. I've not seen this on other cars. (Yes, I'm something of a rookie)

Am I seeing this correctly? If so, was this an option of some sort?

It is the picture.
What you see in the picture is the rear emblems on the trunk.
They just line up to look like a strip in the picture.
