H1 Euro headlight bulbs

My car is an Italian import and I'm assuming the H1 bulb in the high beam position is a Euro model because it doesn't look at all like the ones listed here

Note the black section, I think this is the burned out part? Compare the above to stuff I've found on the 'net

They look entirely different but are both listed as Hella H1 bulbs.

Am I going to have to order them from Europe to get the correct bulb?

I also seem to have the "parking lights" type low beams. When I have the low beams on and shut off the ignition, there is still a low light from inside the fixture. I'm assuming I'll have to order replacements again from Europe as I don't believe we have anything similar here.
 
my h1 bulbs are like the ones that are showed in your link, not like the one that you show in your pic

those h1 can be bought in any shop across the street i.e. PHILLIPS 100% more hi blue light, for around 20 euro each
these are xenon effect, a very good whiteblue light

btw, you know that i will have no problem in preparing a box with those difficult to find goodies and send them to you, i will only need a little time to do so

Thanks deQ! I pulled out the right side high beams and it looked exactly like the one you show. I just got two more H1's for about $19.

I wonder what the first one I posted is? As it's listed as an H1. Really old possibly?
 
They're also available in different wattages, usually 55 and 100. I have 100 and they are like 747 landing lights when on.

I thought about that. What's the heat issue, if any, with the higher wattage?

What's a good way to clean the inside of the lenses? Looks like the center reflector is not real reflective and there is a faint cloud on the inside of the lense. I saw someplace recently a guy used what looked like white blasting grit (glass beads?) but did not detail what it was.
 
Not necessarily a heat issue unless it's an amperage issue that the wires can't handle (heat = resistance), suggest upgrading to relayed wiring and an 85 amp alternator.

DeQ has that good post on cleaning the lenses, I swished around rubbing alcohol in the lens to good results.

The bulb whose picture you posted is an H1, just like all the other ones pictured in the thread and in the links. The difference you are seeing is just a different design as far as the support of the glass enclosure goes, a metal piece vs. an extended glass section. What matters is the distance between the flat, keyed, base of the bulb and the filament, such that when it's placed in the lamp assembly, the light source (filament) ends up in the correct location.

As far as cleaning the inside of the lamp, the reflector and glass, I've had great success with fizzy denture cleaner, forget the brand but any should work, and hot water. The key is to give it a few final rinses with de-ionized or distilled water so that no residue remains on the reflector. I then place them in an oven at around 200 degrees to quickly dry them.

The smaller bulbs you describe as remaining on after you shut off the ignition, but keep the light switch on, are the city lights, equivalent to the US "parking lights", although with a different purpose in Europe/ROW. They are just 4W bulbs which you can pick up at an auto parts store. Not "special" at all.

Cool Tip Luis. Now I have De Quincey's Glass bead technique, Stevehoses' Booze cleanse and your Denture approach. Since I have three lights to clean (bought one new one) I will do a headlight cleaning shootout.

Wife's C280 Benz had 100 watt bulbs when we got it, and after it was totalled (and we got another of the same year, make and model) I transferred the bulbs from the old car.

100 watt bulbs are really bright, please be sure to aim them appropriately. There have been a more-than-sufficient number of haters frothing about Bimmer drivers with their always-on, too-bright headlights. To be fair, this is less a bimmer-only issue than it once was, with every redneck and ricer having hella bright purple lights on the road.

Be aware also (if you care) that in many jurisdictions (all the USA?) 80-watt headlights are the max allowable. Of course, we all know that power consumption is not directly related to light output and we're not going to start a thread about that.

Totalled in spite of the 100W lights? Did she run into a blinded dear by any chance?
A friend put 100W in 911 Hellas plus the cheese plastic protectors for the glass, plus had both filaments on at the same time and the result looked like the headlights went through the Fukushima plant...

BTW, making plans to be in Honolulu in 2 weeks, but I recall you are out, right? If you need parts from mainland I can carry them and leave them at the hotel...
