If this has been discussed, forgive me. I searched but didn't find it.

I just snapped a bolt pulling out a halfshaft to swap a CV boot. (All the bolts were incredibly tight; the shaft had almost certainly never been out of the car.) Both RealOEM and Mobile Tradition list two part numbers for the "fillister-head screw" -- 071 1 991 964 for the M10x70, and 07 50 9 063 196 for the M10x60. Both part numbers show up as NLA in both RealOEM and Mobile Tradition.

GetBMWParts.com lists 11 1 21 342 244 as an M10x70 replacement for the M10x70, though it's eight bucks.

When I look on RealOEM for the bolt on a pre-83 E24, it lists 07 11 9 964 611 as an M10x60. Those, though, thread directly into the flange; there's no nut on the end.

I'm not trying to sweat the price of the bolt; I just want to order the correct part. What have people used for replacement half-axle bolts? Is the M10x60 long enough?

When I removed one of the 1/2 axles from my 2002 (way back when) - I broke one as well.
I just took one of the ones I didn't break down to my local industrial fastener place and got a suitable replacement.

The markings on the head of my original showed the strength required and they were able to match what I needed.

Just my 02 cents....

Based on the torque I had to apply to a Bav I stripped, those little bolts can be in there reallyreallyreally tight... and are pretty strong. I was using a 1/2" pipe cheater and barely got 'em to let go. There may have been some Loc-tite on them but once I got them out I wasn't looking for more trouble.

Best be certain the local hardware store carries something better than Grade 6 or 8. These bolts carry the full torque going to the wheels, and a good deal of braking torque as well.
