I was told that Hardy Beck 16X7 inch wheels are desirable... Anyone know about that?

Very cool/rare and highly desirable, especially with a 16X7" and 16x8" staggered set. Not certain whether they are 2 or 3-piece rims. Would not mind owning a set myself. :D

They came on a CSi I bought and they seller said hey are rare...

They are 3 piece... I will check if they are staggered...

H&B

X2 What Bert said. Hardy and Beck = Alpina West. Don't recall who made those, but they look to me similar to other Alpinas that were period available. I believe OZ made a series like those too. Centers would have been darker back in the days. Nice to see again. Congrats.

I love these wheels and did some investigation. This is what I found out. A bit expensive but they may still be available see the below correspondence from HB

Kirk,

Our H&B wheels for the CS are 7x16" up front, and 8x16" at the rear.

Fronts go for $750 each, rears $800 each. This is for the wheels alone, including valve stems.

But the HB wheels were forged..

I'd consider them more desirable than the Alpina's.

But wheels are subjective. I like Brunettes but blondes are beautiful too.

The H&B 3 piece wheels are beautiful, I've seen them on a few coupes and they just look right.

Just checked the H&B site, they are selling a spring set with specially valved Bilstein shocks for $1445. Has anyone tried this setup?

not bad price

i bought a set that needed repair/refinishing that's still not done and will end up costing more than these new...story of my life lately. Anyway..they are cool.

hi Jeff, just a guess, but...

was that your coupe at the Gerace's on New Years Day?
I was looking through the photos that Max-flieger posted on early S and there is a coupe with H&B rims sitting in front of Marco's Carrera. Looks nice.

must admit that I never heard about these before ... but they look GREAT!!

Happy new year to everyone!

kwyjibo... Yes that was my 3.0CSi at Tonys house...

I was the only idiot at a Porsche event driving an E9... I have been friends with Tony for over 30 years! He has worked on all of my 356s and early 911s... He was at my Wedding in 1984.

But you really have to watch out for that guy Marco....

Marco STOLE my car! Five years ago I bought a pile of SH!T 1970 911T for $800... When I had it delivered to their shop (TLG) Marco told me he was taking my car! He said he needed a body to build his next race car and he thanked me for delivering "HIS" new car...

I said your new car? He then reminded me about the (5) 911S/356 engines and transmissions that I had stored at their shop for over 10 years... I quietly handed him the title for what became his blue 911 with the yellow stripe...

Wait a minute that guy Tony Stole from me also! He took my 1972 911T engine for the new 911 he had in his garage...

But I have figured out a way to get even with both of them... They will both pay dearly for wronging me because I will force Tony and Marco to work on all of my E9s! Pretty severe punishment eh?

BTW I hate Porsches that is why I only have 7...

you may be a very sick man... but maybe your thinking isn't so bad... can we line up behind you?

Happy New Year! soon to be Year of the Dragon (me!)

Thanks for the reply exec.

After posting my question here, I came across a photo of your car while catching up on my post-holiday internet binge. The plates matched with the one from Max's photos - but, I left the post up anyway. IF it makes you feel any better, you actually weren't alone: the photos show that a 308 and a (real-looking) GT40 also showed up. Looked like a nice little collection that day.

Just so that this post is relevant to the original post: yes, desirable, but I'm sure you figured that out already. I can't find a source to confirm this, but I was told that these use forged BBS barrels (don't know about the centers). If anyone can confirm this, that would make these superior to the Ronal-made Alpina rims which are not forged (at least in my book).

Enjoy the toys!

Happy new year to everyone!

During their heydays in the late 1970's to the 1980's, Hardy&Beck BMW was arguably the most famous and respected tuner in the United States. They started out as a repair/tuner shop, then became an official Alpina importer for entire cars and parts. Sometime in the mid 1980's, there was a fallout between these 2 firms that lead to a lawsuit by Alpina against H&B. After this period, H&B produced their own fully modified (ala Alpina style) 3, 5, and 6 series cars, many of which sported their modular rims.

One of their performance parts was the 20 radial spoke 3 piece wheel being discussed here. These rims look kind of similar to the Alpina racing 3-piece version.

Thanks for the info... So Hardy and Beck were period correct upgrade....

Now I have a dilema...

Should I install the set of Original 14X7 real APINA wheels that were original for a CSi or do I keep the period correct Hardy and Beck 16X7 wheels with modern high performance tires?... The turbine style of both wheels look very similar.

Flame away!:p

Hey execmalibu, did you buy that car from a guy in Maryland? I remember a ad on bringatrailer with a Baikal blue car with H&B wheels.

FWIW, my opinion is run the H&B's unless you are worried about them getting damaged. The H&B's are certainly attractive enough and they have the exclusivity of being rare and desirable.

But, if you are a purist, run the originals. It's your car, do whatever you like!

It not like wheels are permanent :)

I am a 14" Alpina wannabe but the H&B's are the one 16" wheel I would consider. Can't lose either way.

Jeff,

i think you ought to do the 14" alpinas ... and sell the h+b's to me. that polished lip would look great on my black car. LOL.

The correct tire for a 14x7 Alpina wheel is 225/60-14. Good luck finding that tire size these days. There is only one tire I know still available in that size and that's a BF Goodrich Radial TA which is geared toward the muscle car market. Go with the 16" H&B wheels, much better tire selection in that size. I traded my 14" Alpina wheels away since the tire selection is non existent. 14" performance tires are going the way of the dinosaur. Now I have a set of 15" old school BBS RA wheels that I'll keep for future use. Much better tire selection in 15" compared to 14".
