Has there ever been an article on how to strip / rebuild carbs on my 2800CS?

Hi all,

My next I-just-got-my-car-back-and-am-fixing-all-the-gremlins question - I wish to strip, clean out and service my carburettors. The car is still fitted with the original Solex's. I'm hoping this will cure the hesitancy I'm getting at low revs when I give it some juice.

I've been told these are tricky to rebuild and get working correctly which I don't believe :-) Nothing is too difficult if you're careful and make sure you don't lose anything / take photos of how things come apart.

Nethertheless, has anyone ever come across a step-by-step guide? I'd like to have my hand held through this, just in case. :-)

I'm also assuming I'm going to need two complete rebuild kits, where can I get these parts from within Europe or even the UK, and should I replacing anything else while I'm there?

Try fitting new accelerator pumps (or at least the seals) and/or adusting the amount of squirt (method is in the blue service book). This can make a world of difference for this symptom. Also vacuum leaks and timing.

if you decide to rebuild make sure you hone the warpage out of each body section so that when lying on a flat surface you can't see daylight underneath. I used fine wet sandpaper layed out on the granite kitchen counter (much to the raised eyebrow of my wife) but it worked fine.

The reubuild process is pretty straightforward, search here for "zenith rebuild" etc. and you will find threads. Also there are some rebuild manuals online also. Get the "major" rebuild kits which include more gaskets etc.

sorry i miss the answer about the kits

there is a one ruddies in germany, but i did not get my way to him, the web site is for "nuclear engineers", or "hackers", don't know

i did not like the usa classicgarage kits, the parts arenot good quality, and even some of them did not coincide with my carb model.

you'd better buy spares in bmw, at least some of them are available, atthe end i got some of the parts from bmw, others from a local dealer who, by the way, ends their stock with me, so things are not getting better these days

also walloth&nesh may have some spares, you should ask

regards

not so easy as you think

hahahahaha

that's what I thought. but getting things back in the correct orientation is NOT ENOUGH. DAMHIK, but you will have considerable adjusting to do, some of which will be iterative (the next adjustment depends on the last, and btw you'll have to go through it several times).

True, there has been a lot of discussion over the years on this list, but no one piece of it will suffice. Lotsa luck. Be sure that all the little itty-bitty other things are correct before you mess with the carbs. Then, at least, you'll know "how good it used to be".

I was a carb noob when I did mine and with the help of 61Porsche and others mine work great and I havent touched them for a year. So go for it.

Try these guys-http://www.carburettorspecialists.com/products.htm

or Jaymic.

Do a tune up and check your points, dwell and timing first.Check your vacuum advance to make sure it's working.

Operate the accelerator pump on each carb by hand- watch for the squirt or no squirt.

Pull the plugs and look at the color. Are they all the same?

Check you're linkage to make sure there's no slop or play. Both carbs working in unisyn.

Good luck.

Trust me I don't take the decision to mess with the carbs lightly!

Done a full service, checked the plug colours, I'm running electronic ignition so no worries about points / gap. Only things left to do are to adjust the valve clearances, check the distributor vac advance mechanism is ok and then.... We're onto the carbs.

The issue is the car hesitates at low revs when you give it throttle and does 18 mpg but otherwise seems to run ok

Mine did this also, if all else checks out as you say then my money is on the accell pumps.
