started all by itself. Car's been sitting for a week, just happened to go out in the garage for something else.

Switch doesn't lock when pushed, so momentary? Been a while.

Bad switch?

Ideas before I break out the meter?

Yea, bad switch. They all fail this way eventually. The "cowboy" fix is to wedge something like a toothpick into the switch to hold the button in the "in" position.

There have been many threads on this topic. My favorite is the one at: http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14525&highlight=flasher&page=2 where Arde suggested a clever fix to reverse the operation of the pushbutton, so it flashes when the button is in instead of out. You still need a new switch to accomplish this, but a) it will last forever, and b) even if it were to fail, it would fail in way that doesn't drain your battery.

+1 on the wedge....

My first experience with that type of switch was with a 2002, thought I'd pull that 'extra lint material' right out....turns out it's suppose to be there for this type of switch.

Standard fix is pull apart and bend post back into position.

Yeah, bending the arm back is very easy to do and is the "right" way to fix it. The hard part is separating the switch halves, and that just requires some patience.
