In a bid to stop my oil lead at the back of the head I plan to retorque the head bolt. I was going to tighten them over the blue book value in a bid to stop the leak. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks,

Rohan

Head gasket retorque

Yes. By all means it's worth a try.

"Caution! Tighten cylinder head bolts after 1000 km
(600 miles). This is done by loosening the bolts slightly and then
tightening them to the spcified torque¹." from the repair manual.

The reason to loosen slightly first is to overcome friction; But, if you find one loose before tighting; that's reason enough for a closer inspection of the block/ threads.

It's probably a good idea to run a leakdown test.

For grins, try an oil pressure guage. The oil relief valve has been known more not to hold as it ages and BMW changed the design; you're issue could be the opposite and just needs cleaned. Worth a check though.

There are instances of the dreaded gasket seep that were reported early on by the seniorsix and e-12 members.

Mind if I ask where abouts the seep is located? Back of the head closest to the firewall?

"Slightly" being the keyword...

Any one who wrenches for a living knows the other advice from the manual-

"Never tighten a headbolt w/o cleaning the borehole or you will crack the block"

The question is - Did you prethread all the headbolts 1ST to make sure the bores were clean and the threads were good?

Can you "Slightly" loosen the bolt w/o allowing oil to flow down the threads?

Good luck to you and remember that autohausaz has headgaskets on sale this month for only 33 bucks!

Hi guys, thanks - will give it a try.

Its not the price of the head gasket its the aggro of changing it! Why is it the more you look after some cars the more trouble they give!

I will hook up an oil gauge and look into the oil pressure relief valve but surely that is only an issue on a very cold morning etc?

Thanks,

Rohan
