Head torque

Trying to make sense of this , Per BMW manual , 3x tightenig stages which is fine, however, in right hand column the torque setting is lower for cold engine ( see #1 footnote ) ...surely the engine is always cold when going through the torquing sequence? Thanks, Simon

We literally went through this yesterday.
Had the situation where the blue books said one thing and the head gasket kit from W&N said something different. From memory ons advised NM and the other was 30 degrees.
Took the view that we'd go with what W&N advised as gasket materials and bolts may have differed in the 50 odd years since first produced.
Either way you need to re-torque bolts after letting engine get to running temp, from memory for 15 minutes.
Can double check later this week if you like?

I believe it’s the heat cycle that modifies the metal in the fire ring to crush further. modern headgaskets come with about 7 thousands difference between the ring and the composite material. Without a heat cycle and 3rd torque you will piss coolant out from between your head and block.

I use the BB numbers, it always amazes me how little effort it takes to get 52 ft/lbs with a good torque wrench.

So,are you saying you use 45, 65 &72 in the sequence ?....or something else ?

In any event Chris, what do you use/ suggest for torque sequence (ft/lbs)?

30, 45, 55. I take it to 60 after it has run in a bit.
