Headlight inserts & wiring

A friend works on a conversion for Euro headlights, mainly Series 1 cars: from H1 to H4 and maybe further. He came across curved Halogen H4 inserts that might fit suit. Some questions appeared.

1 - Did the E3 USA version ever come with H4 inserts (lamps removable), or were they all fitted with Sealed Beam inserts? I'd go for the latter but think it is better to ask Americans.

2 - Do the USA E3 Series 2 & 3 also have inserts with flat screens like the Euro cars?

3 - Wiring. The outer lights are used for dipped beam, the inner ones for full beam. Do the outer lights also turn full beam on USA cars? Or, how many lights are used for the headlight flasher

4 - Parking lights. Probably not integrated in the outside headlights but combined with the front indicators. Is that correct?

Looking forward to your answers.

All US e3 and e9 came with crappy sealed beam lamps, it was required by the DOT.

3. On a US sealed beam the outer has 55 and 60W filaments, the inner is 55w. When high beam is selected the 60w outer goes out and the 55w outer and inner come on. Never more than four filaments on at once. This is why US cars use a different headlight stalk. Flashing uses both lo and high beam lamp single filaments.
4. No parking light in headlights, turn signals have two filament bulbs, one for park and one for turn.

Always glad to help! I just put Marchals on my Chamonix e9 with H4/H1 curved lenses, the other coupe has flat Hellas with H1 lo beam with city light, I modified the hi/lo stalk to activate them.

I have a Euro car but a US wiring diagram. It's a 1971 CS. Is it possible to wire the full beams directly to the relay and not through the low beam headlight connector. Mine are not sealed beam and don't seem to have enough connectors.

The low beams seem to connect through the dip switch so they can continue to be wired like that. Also, it's only got single filament bulbs.

I just purchased a Hella wiring harness and relay system. Used to be avail here but now I could only find them on Ebay and from India. Set up is simple but will only handle one set of lights. Female plug from back of H4 headlight (either L or R, just one) goes into a male plug in the harness and this goes to both relays. Relays are also directly connected to the battery/alternator. Stalk now just activates the relays so they can draw directly from the alternator. I know Dan Stern sells complete set ups also.

I bought my Hella's from Susquehanna Motor Sports. Included with the lights was a schematic for how to have all 6 filaments light up on high beam

Be advised that US DOT rules have a light output limitation. That is why US cars switch to a lower output filament on the low beams when the high beams switch on. This is also why US cars are wired so that the fog lights disable the high beams.

My car is pure Euro and no vehicle inspections in AZ No smog stuff either if the car is pre 80 or has classic car insurance We made a whole new harness using 12 gauge wire. in the early Euros there was, at least in my car, a fuse for each light which we modified so each set of lights were on one fuse and of course running stronger fuses. I have'nt driven the car at night yet so I can't see if there will be a heat issue. I can't believe that Susquehanna would make the schematic available if it causes problems
