Can't budge 'em on my 74.Have been applying copious amounts of Kroil oil to shafts(where does it end up?)have taken the back off a spare seat(no access to tubes)have tried hammer(got another set to go on)just tried a slide hammer(no go) and am beginning to seriously consider my young son's suggestion to tie a rope to the bumper of our pick-up and hittin the gas.Any clever suggestions? There isn't a secret clip on a 74 is there?

head rest removal

no more oil, just goes into seat cavity and makes mess.

Use small amounts of penetrator lubricant for rust break down. Apply and let set for best results. If you can't pull out can you go in? If it will move at all, get it moving and repeat until loose.

Others in past posts have used hanging from tree, but?
I suggest sitting in back seat with front seat reclined for your ability to make pulling in straight line. If you use hammer, use dead weight hammer with 2x4 wood as the strike point.
My 70 cs didn't have clips, and there is no way to access them.

Hope this helps

I realise this is to get them moving, how about to get them off completely so I can retrim the seats
I should be told!
Cheers

Shafts are about 8/9 inches long with grooved edges. Getting it moving is the key. Once it moves keep working it until, you can pull it totally out. No key or clip on mine.
It will want to bind up with one leg longer. Keep them equal to move/remove.
Be very careful of the chromed plastic eschutcheon on top of the upholstery, scratches easily, and hard to replace.
When lifted enough, 1-2 inches. remove black plastic parts next to headrest. 2 small philips head screws on botton each side. Now it gives you room to do some better manipulation. Hammer time!

Success! After much literal blood sweat and tears finally got the bugger off! Secured seat to basement ceiling support pole with towing tie down straps then connected 8000lb come-along to headrest with 6"C-clamp securing other end to basement steps. After wondering which would give out first and some persuading with a 3lb hammer the headrest finally surrendered! After all the frustration the shafts showed only minor(but tenacious) rusting about 2"down. One down one to go.
