Hello and thanks to the admin guys for sorting out my password problem/etc.
I am Paul from London , got a few 70s/80s bmws including a reasonable 74 cs coupe . I say reasonable ,the bodywork seems fairly good but I intend to remove the engine and box and bare metal respray the car.
This car has had too many owners to be a musuem piece so I think I will change the colour from Golf yellow (which is not really my choice ) to something like polaris or a colour that will go with the black leather interior.
First question , this car has air con so can I uprate the engine to a 3.5 say from an E24, E12 , E28 , and keep the air con or which is the best route to go.
Secondly what is the correct offset for a 14" x 6.5 or 7 J alloy wheel for an E9
And finally is it best to get the wooden dash and door trims re-veneered (if so where , I am in London) or do they come up for sale in good nick.
Sorry for all the questions ,
cheers Paul

WELCOME

Hi Paul and welcome to our group. Feel free to ask any questions or advice and don't forget to post your own observations and inputs. I assume you have a carburetted CS.

With your black interior, I would suggest you stay with a light color exterior such as the classic Polaris silver, or some light blue shade such as Fjord, Riviera or even some darker blue hues which include Atlantik, Nachtblau and Baikal. JMO.

As for the 3.5 engine upgrade, you can use the early 3.5 Bosch L-jet motor and it's injection components to retain the looks of the original D-jet equipped 3.0 CSi's. Another option is to go the later Bosch Motronic motor and it's less attractive intake runners, but some have adapted the system to the original C shaped runners. One advantage of the Motronic system is that it allow you to "chip" the ECU and add about 10 to 15 extra horsepower. These engines and it's associated parts can be easily obtained from your local Bmw wrecking yards. Since you are considering this extensive engine upgrade, you might as well install a 5 speed transmission. This will give you a more relaxed high speed cruising and slightly better gas consumption. The unit of choice is the Getrag 265 transmission out of some 6 cylinder cars from the early 1980's which includes the 5, 6 and 7 series.

Finally, for your wood dash and wood door trims, this will be an expensive proposition. Your best option would be to re-veneered all your pieces but it would not be cheap though, plus you can pick out the veneer of your choice, such as zebra wood or other exotic hardwoods. Cost of a re-veneering job or an excellent used unit that you can pick up from ebay or some CS enthusiasts can run you from $1000 to $1500 US dollars or more.

The standard wheel offset is about 10mm or 11mm for those wheel sizes.

Hello Bert
Thanks very much for the answers to my questions . My car is a caruretted one. I only bought this one because it seems to have a fairly sound body and decided that with a decent body I could sort the rest out in time.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the group.

I would also recommend Munich Legends, they are possibly closer than Jaymic. These guys know their way around a CS.

The address is Ashdown Garage, Chelwood Gate, East Sussex. RH17 7DE.
Tel: 01825 740456, Fax: 01825 740094

Welcome to the group!
I think Chamonix (white) would be sweet withthe black interior. My coupe is white with a red leather interior so I am partial to the color.

Thanks Fellas's , I know of Jaymic and have used them for parts and I have heard of Munich legends but never tried them.
Also the colours , my own preference is Fjord blue but with a black interior maybe polaris silver will work best.
Paul
