Just purchased what I believe is a Getrag 265 5 speed. It is a three piece unit with speedo drive on rear, with removable bell housing. I am trying to find out what model it came out of so I can get a manual for possible rebuild and to order parts.

Casting number on tranny is 262.0.0510.90 Not sure about the period placements?

A presumed serial number is stamped which is 031315EX

Anybody have a clue as to if this came out of a E12, E28 or what ever? Is there a serial number cross reference somwhere by year/model?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not the expert... but I also just picked up a Getrag 265 for my 3.0cs. If it actually has the entire mechanical speedo drive setup, it is probably from a 1979, 1980, or 1981 car. Maybe a 528i. I believe the 1985 535i also had the same transmission with the opening for the speedo drive, but with a spacer instead of the drive gear on the shaft. That's what I have, so I'm working on getting the bits I need to make it more like yours.

Out of curiosity what are the numbers on your tranny, casting and any serial number?

Thanks

Five speed conversions, what #'s on your tranny?

Look closer you will probably find a stamped serial number. The numbers you gave are cast.

How about other five speed converters. What numbers are on your trannys?

Thanks

Getrag 5 speeds ID and shop and parts manuals.

Most of these transmissions I have seen did not have serial numbers. Most older BMW transmissions don't have serial numbers. I've thought that even if they did you could not tell what model they came from. After 1980, BMW went to the 17(?)-digit VINs to further muddle identification.

If the transmission has speedometer drive parts, it most likely came from an E12 528i just because of the possible models the most sold were 528i s.

If you want to get a BMW parts manual or shop manual, get the one for the E12 5s.

There is also some coverage of the 265s in the Haynes 528i and 530i manual for the E12 5 series.
