Hi: I have a friend who owns an E9 and it has been in a repair shop for years. He needs a little help with some ID'ing of some components. Anyway, maybe you all can help me decipher what he gave me...

1976 BMW 3.0 CSI : Vin# 4340276 . Engine block #'s {part # 1-252-446-0} and {engine# 4340276} . computer brain# ecu 0 280 001 007 . And research availability of : ignition distributor , throttle switch , air density sensor and original style injectors.

Thanks,

You

found help here on the board!

That vin and engine number show up on realoem as a production of 11/73 and a Euro. Others can comment about the year difference better than me.

Distributers don"t usually go bad and are rebuilt. If he's missing the whole thing somehow- post a wanted. But there's usually a couple on ebay either used or reconditioned.

Throttle sw is available new and cheap.

Injectors- again- if he's missing or just want's new- have them rebuilt or exchanged.

Air density? There's an auxillary air valve is that what was meant? It's not available from BMW but chances are someone here will point you to a source or have a spare.

In regards to the distributor. The distributor for the csi is "special" because it has an extra set of injection points for the firing of the fuel injectors. Normally it's those injection points that need to be replaced and they are still available from BMW. If he actually needs the whole csi distributor, Carl Nelson (www.bimmerdoc.com) probably has a good used one for sale. The distributors and also the injection points are pretty expensive. Good luck,
John

Bosch may be reproducing auxiliary air valves and even pressure sending units/map sensors. http://www.automotive-tradition.de/en/teile/aktuelle_nachfertigung.htm http://www.automotive-tradition.de/en/teile/media/Produkt_Profil_Druckfuehler_en.pdf

That doesn't guarantee that the parts are easy obtained, or inexpensive, but its a start. They have an on-line catalog that might be helpful regarding part number identification, and cross referencing. http://www.automotive-tradition.de/en/teile/onlinekatalog.htm Keep in mind that when researching parts for a csi, you need to search for the listing of the vehicle's country of origin - not the US, where the Csi model was not officially exported for sale by BMW.

Unfortunately, many users of Bosch parts also identify them with their own part numbers, e.g., BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo numbers. In which case, you can try matching part numbers via RealOem e.g., :
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=7031&mospid=47808&hg=13&fg=15

Also, the search function can be helpful. Here is a discussion regarding DJet Part numbers: http://e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2496

Good hunting.
