Highlands, NC is a 760-mile 2-day trip from Ft. Lauderdale. Parking the Coupe in a motel parking lot is not my preference, indeed!!
The town is 4118 ft elevation, and Friday morning was 49 degrees. The Weber carbs have no chokes, but they started right up for the 110-mile tour of the mountains.
Thursday evening was a meet & greet social with the Grand Marshall, Brian Redmond. He and Peter Gregg (no relation) won the 1976 24 hours of Daytona race in the # 59 CSL Batmobile.
I actually went to that race in my 2002 and took a pic of me standing in front of a CSL with Peter Gregg Racing on the front of the car. I stood so the pic doesn't show "Peter" in the background. That's what you do when you're 30 years old....
Brian signed my 1:18 Minichamps model of the #59 and a photo of the CSL's on the track.
BMW was the featured mark and there were many cars (21) from the 1930 Dixi to the 1989 320iS.
The 85 invited autos were outstanding and the people attending along with the owners of all of the cars were very friendly.
The weather on Saturday was beautiful, but Sunday had the prediction of rain about noon. I wanted to get off the twisty mountain roads before they were wet.
The drive on Sunday was in every type of rain-light, fog, cloudy, and downpours. The car would hydroplane in puddles. The wipers worked in every switch function. The A/C kept the windows from fogging. That all-day drive was not fun!! The Monday drive in hot Florida was back to sunny, 80 MPH on the Turnpike.
