I just got some info from the BMW archive about the original build and delivery of my car, but was wondering if anyone knows how I could find out the trail of previous owners and when the car was imported into the US?

Check with your state DMV, in CA that info is verboten.
Do you know someone at your local police department? That's what Jim Rockford would do...
I received a lot of paperwork from the PO of Athena in a folder, including the import paperwork as well as receipts from the owner who imported it. I have added to the folder and will pass it on to whoever buys Athena if that time ever comes.
If that info was not handed down to you it will be difficult to sleuth it.
The PO I bought mine from was the son of the deceased owner so he didn't know who his dad got it from. Fortunately I found an old insurance card under the carpet from the PPO and I found her still alive and she gave me the whole story. Google is your friend if you can get a lead.
