While you could substitute a used lever, it will probably fail in the same way. The force on that cable is pretty high and the lever is not that well designed. Someone needs to come up with a titanium replacement!
I repaired my lever by using an 8-32 screw, about 3/4" long + a flat washer that clamp the two pieces together ahead of where the cable attaches. Here's a photo that attempts to show what I did.
