So I ordered 51 71 1 810 531 from BMW (its the second seal in starting from the firewall) and the profile is not the same. I'm holding the new seal, which is not as complex as the original. Anyone have a source for the correct one, or is it NLA? Thanks.

Check W&N.... I ordered a hood seal from them and it has worked ok for me....

I think it's NLA, I got the same one you did, it fits and probably seals better than the original one. Just install with it angled back and it will take the shape of the metal and hood latches over time.

i think we need to start searching thru standard gasket / seal profiles and find one closer to the original. the new one puts too much strain on everything.

I got my seal 2 years ago, I don't recall if it had to be ordered from Germany or whether the vendor I bought it from had it on hand.

It had more of an 'S' shape to it:

Same with mine. It holds the hood open a little, and makes it very difficult to latch.

Me too

I also have a W n N hood seal and the hood does not close properly anymore

The seal being discussed is the one that runs straight (right angle) across the engine bay's firewall.

Do you remember the vendor? Thanks.

I got it from CSI Inc, and Ben did have to order from Germany.
Here's the tag for the part I got:

You can clearly see it was a different design than the piece I took off my car, which I think was original, see below. And it
did make the hood a bit harder to close. Thought that it was an indication that it would do a better job of keeping engine smells
from entering into the car.

Mine took a little time to accept the hood brackets but once contoured it's not difficult to shut at all and definitely seals better than my original one. Not great looking (seems like it was designed for something else), but acceptable I guess.

When I replaced this item I found it to be hard to bend to the contour of the metal.
I used a heat gun on low for the 2 curves on the ends and it fits perfectly.
No issue with hood closure, and tight fit
I purchased from LaJolla/Carl.

I think the pronounced S curvature on my original seal is from years of compression, because none of the new seals pictured have the same profile? I guess the new seal will look the same as the old one in 40 years...
