Hi,
there is a rectangular shaped hole in the roof frame, the mirror has two springs fitted in the base which allow the mirror to just clip in place. its takes some effort though

it is a major league PITA to get the mirror back into that hole. for me it took 2 people. we placed one of the springs on the edge of the opening pushing to compress that spring as far as we could. then we used a small screwdriver to compress the other spring and then wrestled it into the opening. it took a couple of tries.
well, my experience was not that bad, but first oil the springs and end bits
then using a vice move it a bit before attempting on the car

sounds like a good start. didn't think about the vice. be careful to wipe the oil to avoid getting it on the headliner.
