How many E9s were built per color?

i don't think i've ever seen this information posted - discussed many times though. perhaps we could get Andreas Harz to give the info to the CS Registry ... and we could sort it out and publish it on the site.

anybody on the forum have a good connection with him? i would gladly volunteer to help sort out the data - or at least a portion of it.

Maybe I am mistaken, but am sure i saw it somewhere. Google has failed me too. Would be nice to have though. Easy enough to sort out if we get some kind of list.

it would be great to actually have a spreadsheet separated by model and VIN - annotated with the original color - which could be tied to the Registry ... where we can start to get a list of how many of a color that we know to still exist.

I don't believe Andreas has any of this info, it all exists on individual data cards. The CSLs are more documented and some of the experts here who own CSLs have some of this data.

do you think we could get Andreas to scan the cards and email us the scans? even if they are in german, google translate works pretty easy.

I have predicted before and predict again the answer will be NO.

Any bets?

So no one has asked before? I speak German so I will drop him an email and ask.

If we could get a scan of all cards we could use OCR to have the computer pick out the relevant text from all cards.

naah - never bet that a big corporation will do anything significant for a group of enthusiasts. but, if you don't ask, the answer is already no ... so nothing lost.

there is another way - it might take a while. but we get every member to send in 10 requests over a couple of weeks. wait a month and do the next sequence.

BMW built over 30,000 coupes, I doubt they have the resources or see the value in trying to extract that data. MB did the same thing but their data cards list option codes, colors and serial numbers of axles, diffs, tannies, etc. but again it is not organized or computerized, it is a manual search of microfiche to provide results.

Got a quick reply back saying they indeed need to check each one manually :(

Out of curiosity I replied asking why and how the data is stored now to see if it could be possible to do something. Will update with that.

If the data is on fiche and in a "clean" way it could be possible to scan and OCR it to get it into a computer. Not holding my breath though.

UPDATE : It is not digitised and the public does not have access to the raw data due to security reasons.

Hej Johan,

Many thx for the info.

I can add that BMW, normally, only give access to these records for journalists/authors and researchers etc. It is a manual work to collect this kind of data. So far, it has (as far as I know) only been done (by non-BMW staff) for the CSL cars.

The data is manually stored on "production cards" from the 70s. These cards are also the basis for BMW Classic, when they issue the "Zertifikat/Certificates" for classic E9 cars etc.

Cheers

Henric

that's what i was thinking ... any writers in the group? anybody got anything published? they could claim to start a new book, and appoint a few researchers. they could tell BMW that we will have a forward written by the e9 guru - Murray, aka BLUMAX.

it could be an on-line published book - only available on CS Registry, featuring pictures and technical descriptions of some of the restorations of some of our cars, with a lot of production data - credited to BMW AG.

i'm willing to be one of the researchers

Corporation, Individual, or Public organization I predict the same NO answer to requesting their database.

Yes, we can obtain the database by asking for one VIN at a time...

It has nothing to do with asking nicely or speaking german. Maybe if you had pictures of Andreas in compromising positions you would have some leverage.

My bet offer stands.
