How often do you actually change your fuel filter ?

I take a sharpie and denote the date of filters when possible. The last time I changed my fuel filter was May 2016. I only drive my Coupe about 1,000 miles per year mostly city driving. I’m thinking of changing the fuel filter again in the next few months. Overkill ?

Change mine every 2 years , when all the fluids are changed also
only do average of 1500 miles every 6 months ... dry weather driving only ...

My Forester filter has 140,000 miles on it. If you suspect rust in your tank, change the filter...often.

in principle a metal canister fuel filter is known to be for csi, as fuel prssure from electric pump is higher
it is not advisable to use a metal filter in a cs with mechanical fuel pump
DQ,
Which fuel filter would be most suitable for me ? Brand and model . Thanks

just a plastic transparent with paper filter element will be apropriate
mann, hengst, and others make this type of filters,
i do not have this type of filters in my setup, i can not show you a photo,
i use the old style glass bottle with a micromesh and decanter
you do not need to change this kind of filters, you open, clean and close, additional feature is that you see fuel cristal clear
my coupe is a 3.0cs

Here's mine, I matched the in/out diameter to the fuel hose, pretty simple Purolator or Fram, just make sure it's pointed in the right direction and it's before the fuel pump.

DQ,
Thank you for your reply. I actually prefer plastic fuel filters where I can assess the fuel clarity in the filter.

Steve,
Do you have the brand and model of that particular fuel filter ? It looks like a good set-up.

The CS clear “paper” filters are indistinguishable from ones sold for many lawn mowers/tractors. I got mine from the regular BMW Parts sources, but if you are in a jam, you can pick up the same thing from parts chain stores or hardware stores, etc.

Last month I had an old mechanic suggest that if you suspect corrosion or after fiddling with tank or lines, use two of these filters back-to-back to be sure and catch everything and protect the carbs. Haven’t tried it, but it sounds logical.
