How to get the axle drive for the speedometer....

First i want to apologize for my poor english in the next sentences!

I bought a Getrag 262 5-speed gearbox in good shape from an E28 a few weeks ago, but without the speedometer drive.
I want to install this gearbox into my E3....
I have a couple of not needed 4-speed-Getrags in my sparepart-container, all within the axle drive, but i cant dismantle the worm wheel.
No chance, i had to disassemble the whole gearbox to get this fu.....ing wheel ! :twisted:

I could have kicked myself. So i decide to build an extractor to get them off easyer.
Maybe a few of my colleagues in Vienna will need such a tool too.

Nice job, very good.
How did you install the little teeth inside the puller? Did you drill holes in the puller,inserted the teeth and than put a spotweld on it?

Hi Martin!

I did no welding, i´d drilled holes with 3,99mm diameter and insert the little bolts (4,00mm) tight fit.
I had the first dismantled wormwheel in the extractor and the bolts were driven in as long as the wormwheel are able to move.
The overcoming material of the bolts i grind away and put a liner with only 1mm wall thickness around.

I needed less time to build the extractor then to disassemble the first gearbox..... only 1 hour.....

Das hoert sich danach an als ob du ein Maschienenschlosser/Dreher bist. Sonst haette wohl niemand einen 3.99mm Bohrer im Sortiment.

Only a turner would carry this size bit in his assortment, great idea.

Mechanical engineer i think is the word in english, i´m working on milling machines since 1982.
Ich bin sowas ähnliches wie Maschinenschlosser, CNC-Fräser seit 1982, wenn ich´s da noch nicht kann, werd ich´s wohl nie lernen :lol:

Your post came at a good time for me -- I am trying to pull the worm drive gear out of my own 4-speed for use in a 1985 265. I am trying to imitate your tool (but crude by comparison!). I have the basic body ready to go, and I am trying to figure out the placement of the little bolts.

1. How many threads are on the gear, two?

2. Can you explain the detail of the lower right part of your drawing showing where to place the holes for the little bolts?

I do not have an extra gear to take my own measurements from, or to try out the fit of the tool. I have to get it right by measurement.

Orangener, thanks to your drawing, I was able to complete my version of the removal tool and successfully extracted the gear from my old 4-speed!

I started with a threaded coupling for rigid electrical conduit, which happened to be almost exactly the right OD to start with. I turned off most of the internal threads on my little micro-lathe until the ID was correct over about half the length of the cylinder. Then I tapped the holes for #8-32 screws which I filed into the tapered tooth shape before inserting. I secured the screws with red Loctite, then cut the heads off on the lathe. I had to add the three screws/nuts at the other end to provide gripping points for an ordinary 3-jaw puller to do the extraction. That gear was on tight.

This shabby imitation took me much more than one hour to make, but the tool fit on the first try!

Orangener, these pics you provided are a great help! I'm about to put the speedo drive parts in my (late 80's) getrag 265. I've now got the wormwheel and the speedo drive gear as well as a 40mm rubber shaft seal. Couple questions though...

How far do you drive in the wormwheel and what holds it in place?

I might be missing a spacer that would go between the ball bearing and the wormwheel to set its location.

Yes, there is a spacer beetween bearing and wormwheel!

late 80's Getrag 265 mech speedo install

After seeing how much of a pain it is to extract the wormwheel, I really wanna make sure I put the thing in right so I don't have to turn around and pull it out!! So I just want to ask a couple things. There was a large spacer in my tranny behind the shaft seal (1st pic below). It slid off easily and would rotate on the shaft easily. Hopefully wormwheel will go on snug, but I don't understand why it doesn't have teeth inside to grab the shaft.

Here's the output shaft after removing the thick spacer. The bearing has a seal on it that I didn't see in your pics.

Does it matter which side of the wormwheel goes in first? Either way it will spin the gear properly, but one side has a tiny groove etched around the circumference. I'm guessing that side goes in first?

Did you apply any sealant (silicone based or other?) to the rubber shaft seal or the speed drive gear when you inserted them? The speedo gear has an o-ring, but I'm not sure that's enough of a guarantee against leaking oil.
 
FYI, that extractor is insanely unnecessary.

To get that gear out, I used a 90 degree pick like this one to get behind it.

And a screw driver through the drive gear tube (w/the drive gear removed obviously) to get behind the gear.
